The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian
reservation in the United States, spreading over
16 million acres in Arizona, New Mexico, and
Southern Utah. Many of the 200,000 Dine, as the
Navajo call themselves, live in remote
communities on the high desert. In this harsh
and resource-poor environment, every day brings
a struggle for survival in the face of extreme
poverty and isolation. Job opportunities are
virtually non-existent and visits from health
care workers may be sporadic at best. Many
homes lack electricity, running water, and
telephones. At the end of each month, many
Navajo go hungry. If you think these conditions
don't exist in America today, you are sadly
mistaken. The shocking truth is that -- in the
remotest corners of our great nation --
thousands of First Americans live in Third World
conditions.
The Navajo Relief Fund (NRF) exists to brings
hope to these struggling families. The
difference between NRF and many other
humanitarian groups is that we aim to reduce
dependency and build on the strong sense of
pride and community that is prevalent among
Native Americans.
NRF's goal is to help build "strong,
self-sufficient Native American communities."
Operating out of Flagstaff, Arizona, NRF seeks
donations of needed supplies from corporations
and gift-in-kind charities, and funds from
caring people for transportation to the Navajo
Reservation.
